  APPROACHING & ON
THE IDES OF MARCH

Puppet Uprising and the Missoula Oblongata team up to present our third Five-Company Shakespeare Dessert Theater Production: JULIUS CAESAR.

Don a red carnation and sport your finest attire! Gather with other patrons on the appointed hour at the point of rendezvous (the Vine Street Stop on the Broad Street Subway). From there you shall be whisked off to the Secret Theater for William Shakespeare's five-act revival of ancient Rome's most celebrated leader—and the conspiracy that ousted him.

  FIVE COMPANIES

Each act of JULIUS CAESAR shall be re-envisioned by one of five theatrical companies (and accompanied by the serving a dessert!) This year's esteemed performers are:

ACT I—Semi-Upright Puppet Company (NYC)
ACT II—Green Chair Dance Group (Philly)

ACT III—Puppetyranny (Philly/New Orleans)

ACT IV—Nommo Theatre (Baltimore)

ACT V—Fence Kitchen (Philadelphia)
PLUS—Jacob Berendes, your between-act guide, hailing from the urban wilds of New England.

FIVE DESSERTS

As you travel from act to act, you will be served an assortment of desserts fit for an emperor. A legion of local bakers and confectioners have been enlisted to feed your sweet teeth, including Jason Schoen and his infamous vegan eats from Studio 34, the sweet dim sum of New Harmony Vegetarian Restaurant in Chinatown, critically acclaimed concoctions from Brown Betty Dessert Boutique, some more playful decorum from A Cupcake Wonderland, plus the ranks of many unnamed master bakers who toil over the ovens of Philadelphia.

ABOVT THE COMPANIES PERFORMING THE PLAY

THE SEMI-UPRIGHT PUPPET COMPANY (Jason Hicks and Quince Marcum) ring in Act I with a crash of music, trash, puppets and bad Italian accents filtered through the mountains of North Carolina, the swamps of Lousiana, and the streets of New York City. The Semi-Uprights come from a long line of notorious brass bands and puppet troupes, including the Rude Mechanical Orchestra, RPM Puppet Conspiracy, and the Bread & Puppet Theater.

GREEN CHAIR DANCE GROUP (Sarah Gladwin Camp, Hannah de Keijzer, Gregory Holt, Graeme McHenry abd Danielle Currica) is a plucky band of collaborative dancefolk who have been roaming the fields for the last six years, having peddled their dancewares at the PhillyFringe, Florida Dance Festival, and the International Contemporary Dance Festival in Bytom, Poland. Green Chair's members teach a variety of dance arts in Philadelphia, and are dedicated to bringing dance into all the troubles of the present age. They will be pesenting Act II of Julius Caesar.

PUPPETYRANNY (Candra Kennedy, Craig Hendrix, John Sinclair, Kestrel Plump, Leslie Rogers, Owen Brightman and Zac Palladino) is a commitee of craftastic wrongdoers based in Philadelphia and featuring tyrannical circus and annoyance arts from abroad. The Puppetyranny presnts Act III through a mix of animation, live music, puppetry, stiltwalking, flying trapeze, piñata swinging, and regular old acting. Rumor has it that the Puppetyranny has ties to Spiral Q Puppet Theater, Walking Fish Theater, the Baltimore Annex Theater, the Arden Theater Company, the Bread & Puppet Theater, and yes, even Puppet Uprising.

NOMMO THEATRE (Mitchell Ferguson and Bashi Rose from Baltimore, Maryland) is devoted to creating work that entertains, provokes thought, and ignites healthy debate. Originating with the Dogon of Mali, the term "nommo" ("the word") came through popular use during the Black Arts Movement by literary artists such as Larry Neal and Paul Carter Harrison. For Act IV of Julius Caesar, Nommo Threatre fuses the text of The Bard through the Black experience with all its ritual, spirituality, and resistance intact. Come to Nommo's workshop on March 13th at Studio 34—Click here for details!

FENCE KITCHEN—a perpetual work-in-progress employing original music, lighting design, dance, and marionette manipulation and object installation—performs Act V of Julius Caesar as the husband-and-wife team of Tim Harbeson and Buffy Miller. Tim is a composer, sculptor, furniture maker, wooden boat builder, and puppeteer who has exhibited at Philly's ICA and John Zorn's Tonic, plus served as a member of cult bands Tarpigh and Cerberus Shoal. Buffy is a Bessie Award-winning dancer and choreographer, having danced and toured internationally for a decade in New York's Ballet Tech and created over 30 new works with Eliot Feld. Both Buffy and Tim have earned fellowships from the State of Maine and now run the Stillhouse Theatre in Philadelphia's Mount Airy neighborhood.

JACOB BERENDES is a performer, musician and proprieter of good taste from Providence, Rhode Island who has been enlisted to guide the audience from act to act in this 5-company production of Julius Caesar.
